Jay Winters - 109 Veranda Drive
President
Hailing from Calgary, the Winters Family bought 109 Veranda Drive in May 2018, though they have been taking their summer vacations at Veranda Beach since 2013. Since becoming owners, Jay and his wife Regan -- along with their three boys, Jack (13), Oliver (11) and Archie (10) – have been spending as much time as they can at the beach, including the full summer months, March Breaks, Thanksgivings, Christmases and New Years. Jay is a tax lawyer and a partner at Bennett Jones LLP -- The firm that businesses trust with their most complex legal matters. You can find his full bio and contact information on the Bennett Jones website (www.bennettjones.com/WintersJohn).
Greg Caldwell - 124 Barefoot
Treasurer
Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta the Caldwell family has been coming to Veranda since the summer of 2019. We had such a great time that we decided to purchase 124 Barefoot Lane in February of 2020 and have been thrilled with our decision to become part of the Veranda community. Greg is married to his lovely wife Kathryn and they have two children Bennett (8) and Emily (6). COVID has not made it easy however we have made every effort possible to be at our second home in Veranda and look forward to many more years of family fun at the lake.
Greg is a registered professional engineer and holds a CPA designation. He formally served as a condo board president for a 52-home development from 2009-2011.
Genni Reilly - 130 Village Way
Secretary
Genni is a recent full-time resident of Veranda Beach retiring and moving in May 2022.
Genni was attracted to the beauty and people of Veranda Beach and wanted to make Oroville and Veranda Beach her home. In many ways it is like coming home for her. She was born and raised in the City of Okanogan (go Bulldogs) and left for the big city of Seattle in 1972. After 10 years as an accountant, Genni took a position in commercial property management that became her life-long career. Genni spent the next 40 years managing all types of commercial property; high rise office, suburban office, R & D, industrial, incubator warehouse buildings, residential, you name it. During her career she managed multi-million dollar operating budgets, expensive and complex capital projects, long-term projection planning and budgeting, and everything in between. Genni's career successes were due to her ability to communicate and understand not only the short-term but long-term goals and working well with people. She is excited to bring her experience and talents to the board and is hopeful she will be successful in her candidacy as a new member of the Veranda Beach HOA Board.
Danae Hordyk - 105 Timbuktu
Communications Officer
Danae Hordyk, and her husband, Derrick, purchased 105 Timbuktu in 2020 after vacationing in Oroville for more than 17 years and growing to love the Veranda Beach community. They reside full-time in Bothell, Washington with their three children – Zander, age 9, who plays baseball, loves reading and art, is learning to wakeboard, and loves tubing; Ryder, age 7, who plays baseball and hockey, aspires to play for the Kraken…or at least in the NHL (and promises to share $5, $10, or $15 million with Mom and Dad one day!), tolerates school, and loves to play anything active; and Quinn, age 5, who loves to swim/tube/dance/sing, play mermaids and unicorns and all the girly things, and is excited to start kindergarten and try soccer in the fall. Danae grew up in the Seattle area, then attended Trinity Western University in Langley, BC for four years where she met Derrick (who grew up in White Rock, BC) and graduated with a BA in Communications. Danae and Derrick have been married for nearly 16 years, and while they have lived in the Seattle area, have spent lots of time in Victoria, and throughout the BC lower mainland and Okanagan visiting friends and relatives (and even made a trip to Calgary during Stampede!).
Danae is currently a stay-at-home mom, but in her prior life worked as an executive assistant to a team of more than 10 executives, including the CEO and CFO, at a real estate software company (later acquired by Trulia and Zillow). She was also the chair of the company’s FUN Committee!
Danae describes herself as a…
- “pretty good”: wife, mom, friend, grammar-corrector, organizer/planner, sports fan, wine-taster
- “decent”: hostess, cook, baker, cleaner, board/card game player
- “mediocre”: wakeboarder, skier, surfer, snowboarder, corn hole player
- “terrible”: runner, hiker, athlete, gardener, poker face
Danae and Derrick prioritize faith, family and friends (and fun), and are so thankful to raise their children with this “village” that is Veranda Beach. Danae hopes her participation on the HOA board will further grow HOA endeavors around (1) protecting the family-friendly nature of the community, (2) maximizing the value of its unique blend of ethnic,
professional, generational, and geographic backgrounds, and (3) continuing its financial responsibility and accountability.
Taryn Striegel - 107 Flip Flop
Hello VB Family!
For those of you that I have not previously met my name is Taryn Striegel, my cottage is Flip Flop 107 and I am married to my handy-man Scott who you have probably seen refinishing some of the original VB furniture around the resort over the years. We have two son’s Kazen (7) and Huxton (5) and of course our yellow lab Summit who is 13 years old.
When I first heard about Veranda Beach it sounded like a magical place out of a fairytale. I still didn’t believe it existed even after seeing photos, I had to see it with my own two eyes. After driving down the hill for the first time I just knew… It was the place for our family. After all we had been looking for the ‘perfect’ beach house for a few years at that point. I fell in love with every last detail that went in to making the resort aesthetically pleasing but then I met the people.
Everyone from the staff to the neighbors, to the visitors was delighted to be there, didn’t want to leave and couldn’t wait to come back. Lastly, my mind was blown away by how safe the resort was after growing up vacationing in Lake Chelan in a busy resort where my parents wouldn’t have dreamt of letting me ride my bike around the block alone at the age of 2 or 3.
As for Education and work experience I double majored at Western Washington University in Recreation and Leisure Services with an Emphasis in Tourism, as well as Communication. I then became a Wedding and Event Coordinator and started my own company planning weddings. After meeting my husband Scott who is a high school teacher, I decided I didn’t want my busy season to be his off season because we would never be able to travel and an opportunity presented itself to interview for a position at Boeing as a Project Manager in Supply Chain. I have now been with Boeing for 12 years and to this day it takes my breath away when I step foot in the Everett Factory and look at the massive products we build, they are truly remarkable! While being at Boeing I went back to school to receive my Masters in Project Management, graduating in 2015.
Our kids are the most important thing to Scott and I which is why we wanted to find a family beach house where we could make memories that would last a lifetime, support our active lifestyle, and allow us to feel safe when we all want to go our own way during the day or evening. This is why it is important to me to be involved on the board.
As an HOA Board representative, I will work to ensure that Veranda Beach remains the true gem we all fell in love with on day one by doing the following:
- Making VB the safest resort in Washington State not only for our kids but for everyone!
- Making Veranda Beach the most family friendly place possible. I appreciate and support all of the hard work the Fun Committee has taken on since inception in order to offer our children and families opportunities to create lasting memories and I plan to support in growing that however I can!
- Being a voice of fiscal conservatism. I want to use my experience in this area to ensure that Veranda continues to stay financially healthy as we continue to grow and develop for many years to come. (I like to give credit where it is due and I stole this from Josh Hartley’s Bio from last year – so thanks Josh!)
- I hope to help make sure we are not only looking out for what it is our community needs now, but also planning for the future, saving appropriately with the cash we do have, and not pricing people out of our resort by the decisions we are making.
- Lead an open forum for community members choosing to rent their cottage and possibly even start an official Rental Committee. Many of you know I have led the charge to fight for the homeowner’s rental rights at VB. I will continue to stand strong and support anyone choosing to open their home to renters.
Thank you for considering myself as one of your VB HOA Board Members. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out via text or phone call: (425) 269-6302 or feel free to knock on my door when we are around. I look forward to another wonderful Veranda Beach Summer with each and every one of you!
Josh Hartley - 90 Veranda Drive
For those of you who I haven’t previously met, I’m Josh Hartley. My wife Jenn and I, and our two boys (Davis 8 & Estes 6) live full time in Hayden Idaho and are lucky enough to get to spend most of our summer and holidays at beautiful Veranda Beach.
I have a degree in Economics from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Saint Louis University. Following graduate school, I briefly pioneered a startup company and then spend about a decade in Corporate America while Jenn advanced through her career in higher education. After having our second child, we made the decision to leave our busy work travel lives behind to spend more family time together and we moved to Idaho to run our own business.
Today we employ about 20 people in North Idaho operating a small fencing company and metal fabrication and construction company that outfits and installs metal railings and carports at new apartment complexes throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. As our business has matured, we’ve been fortunate to spend a lot of family time exploring the Pacific Northwest, down time at the lake, and volunteering and investing time in activities important to us.
That is why I’m running for Veranda Beach HOA. I’d like to give back to Veranda Beach with my time and efforts and help to ensure that the place that has become so special to us continues to be special for all that call this place home. I believe I can utilize my background in finance and business operations to help carry on the great work that has gotten our community to this point and also push it forward into its next phase of growth. I want to work to ensure that Veranda continues to make progress to fulfill its full potential.
Jenn and I purchased here primarily because we wanted to give our boys the freedom to have fun and grow up without the worries that we often encounter in the “real world”. As an HOA representative, I will work to ensure that Veranda Beach continues to be that place.
As your representative, I will strive to always work for the following:
- Making Veranda Beach the most family friendly place possible. I hope to continue the outstanding work started by the Fun Committee and continue the push to grow the number and scope of those activities. Getting to know your neighbors is what makes a community great.
- Being a voice of fiscal conservatism. I want to use my experience in this area to ensure that Veranda continues to stay financially healthy as we continue to grow and develop for many years to come.
- Push to implement additional amenities that are desired by the community and set plans in motion to make them a reality. Veranda Beach is incredible as is, but that doesn't mean it can’t be even more. Whether it be a big-ticket item like a new sports court or smaller items like additional awnings poolside, I believe it is important to understand the wants and needs of our community and put action in place to achieve those goals.
Kiera Wright - 115 Barefoot
As I wrap up my 22nd year of teaching high school this week in western Washington, I look forward to the best perk of the profession…summer break! With that free time comes the enjoyment of making memories at our lake house here at Veranda Beach. We stumbled upon Veranda Beach when visiting friends two summers ago when they invited us to enjoy a week with them at their new lake house so that our boys, who are school mates, could kick off their summer break at the lake. It was love at first sight and by happenstance, a house three doors down was for sale and we placed an offer on it that weekend as we drove home! This lake house is our investment in the next nine summers that we will have as a family before our son heads off on his own after high school graduation with the hopes that he will bring his college buddies, future significant others, and his children here to enjoy all that is magical about Veranda Beach.
Our story is no different than many of yours as most homeowners discovered Veranda Beach as renters themselves or by visiting friends and that is my goal as a future HOA Board Member…protect the best part of all our collective family stories…the memories we make at Veranda Beach. There are three things to protect:
- Our investments into the homes and common spaces supported by economical saving and spending of the HOA assessments
- Maintaining the quality Veranda Beach experience for homeowners and renters by ensuring that approved rental agencies and the HOA enforce the CC&R’s and provide the safest and most rewarding experience to homeowners, guests, and each other
- Increase homeowner knowledge and approval of recommendations made by the HOA Board that tailors to homeowner expectations and wants as assigned in the By-Laws
I will protect our investments, maintain the concept of Veranda Beach that allows for growth and common sense, and communicate ideas and needs to homeowners as an HOA Board Member. My decades as an educator of high school Math, History, and Spanish here in Washington and previously in Michigan and Arizona have given me the skill set of implementing standards and providing scaffolds so that all stakeholders can access success on their individual path while working with different administrations, school systems, students, staff, parents, and communities. We as homeowners have a common expectation for our time at Veranda Beach. Individually we make our own memories that should not include hidden agendas, increased fees due to poor spending choices, and divisive motions and amendments that tear apart our community from the past actions of a few that bear nothing on the present or the future.
A singular vote for me, Kiera Wright, is a vote for a fresh voice advocating for transparency, fairness, and a sustainable future for the generations of Veranda Beach to come. I have joined the Finance Committee to learn about and be a voice of caution and reason for future spending and will continue that collaboration and teamwork as a Board member that is here to make memories with my family and yours.
